The US men’s national team will learn their World Cup fate on Friday.

Even though the team lost 2-0 to C on Wednesday evening, the Americans are back in the World Cup for the first time since 2014. In 2014, the United States were placed in Group G with Germany, Portugal and Ghana. The squad managed to advance to the knockout stages but lost to Belgium.

US manager Gregg Berhalter is hoping to ride the junior wave deep into the World Championship.

“We are the youngest team ever to qualify for the World Cup, the youngest US team and we will be the youngest team at the World Cup,” Berhalter said on Wednesday. “It’s an achievement for these guys. It really is.”

Christian Pulisic is one of America’s top stars. He plays for Chelsea in the English Premier League but is also the top scorer who has given US fans hope the squad can achieve something big on the world stage.

“That was one of the hardest days of my life. I will never forget that,” said Pulisic. “To be in this position now – qualified for a World Cup, we are all very proud of that.”

This year’s tournament, taking place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, is the last to feature 32 international teams. The 2026 tournament, held in North America, will have 48. The World Cup takes place in the second half of the year as the country can suffer from the severe heat.

The draw already has a handful of surprises in store. Italy, the four-time world champions, failed to qualify after a qualifying defeat by North Macedonia. Russia was banned from participating in the event due to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, and Canada qualified for the first time in 36 years.

Those who have previously won join the tournament including: Germany, Brazil, France, Spain, England, Argentina and Uruguay.

The United States has never won at the men’s. They achieved their best result in 1930 when they placed third. Since then, the team has not finished better than eighth.
