Woman dies after using wrong spoon to stir tea days after proposing marriage

A 24yearold woman died just days after getting engaged. The cause of death? She used the wrong spoon to stir her teacup. Jess Prinsloo, from Salisbury, England, was on holiday in South Africa with her partner of three years, Craig McKinnon, when he proposed to her. Unfortunately, the couple’s happiness was shortlived as the young woman had a fatal reaction to the drink.

Jess had a severe milk allergy and was rushed to the hospital after using a milktipped spoon to stir her tea. Within moments, she went into anaphylaxis that caused her throat to constrict. She usually carried two pills to reverse a possible allergic reaction, but they didn’t work. The woman, who worked as a marketing manager, was taken to the hospital but died the next day, on New Year’s Eve.

Her heartbroken fiancé said the two were on a dream trip when he proposed to her at God’s Window in Mpumalanga. “A lot of her family members live in South Africa and she hadn’t returned in six years, so I knew there couldn’t be a better place to propose,” Craig told British publication The Mirror. “My voice cracked as I got on my knees and asked, ‘Will you marry me?’ She said, “Oh my god” and started crying before saying yes. The look on his face… it meant everything.”

Craig told the newspaper he met Jess at university in 2019 before moving in together in 2021. He said the bride has had other similar episodes before. “Another time, she ordered a vegan, nondairy dessert and required multiple medications and a trip to the hospital. I haven’t eaten dairy for about three years because it just wasn’t worth the risk,” he explained. According to the boy, his companion had been allergic to dairy since she was 9 months old and was revived at age 18 after being fed milk had come into contact.

After the young woman’s death, Craig struggled to pay medical bills of £3,700 about R$23,000 at the current exchange rate of the pound and a further £1,200 (R$7,500) in coroner’s fees. To help with expenses, Jess’ family started an online crowdfunding campaign and managed to hold her funeral in South Africa. But back in Great Britain, the groom wants to organize another farewell for his beloved this Monday (23rd). “When Jess died, a part of me died too but there’s no one to blame for his death,” he lamented.

The man also wants to help people deal with allergies and possible health problems. “It’s something people can’t control and it can kill them. I just want people to listen and understand how serious this is.”
