The ski collision process has dragged on for years

In a case spanning years since the 2016 incident, Sanderson is suing Paltrow for $300,000 – claiming the Park City accident was a result of negligence and left him with physical injuries and emotional distress.

In ski resorts, the downhill skier has the right of way, so a key question in the case is who was further down the beginner’s slope when the collision occurred. Both Paltrow and Sanderson allege in court filings that they were further down the hill when the other rammed them.

Sanderson also accused Deer Valley and its employees of engaging in a “cover-up” by not providing complete information on incident reports and by not following the resort’s safety guidelines.

Mr Sanderson was 69 years old at the time of the incident.

The defense claims the incident was captured in GoPro, but no evidence was submitted

The defense argued during Tuesday’s opening arguments that Mr Sanderson sent a link to his daughter on the day of the accident.

“Dad, I can’t get over how unfortunate and how crazy this all is… I’m so glad you’re okay,” his daughter said.

The defense is trying to downplay a retired eye doctor’s claims of serious injuries

The defense instructed the jury to “have no pity” on Mr. Sanderson.

In a bid to undermine the plaintiff’s allegation, lawyers for Gwyneth Paltrow claimed Mr Sanderson has traveled to more than 10 countries since the 2016 skiing accident.

The defense argued that Terry Sanderson was exaggerating the extent of his injuries, adding that the alleged brain damage he sustained was actually the result of aging and pre-existing brain damage.

Gwyneth Paltrow claims a retired optometrist drove into her

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow’s day on the slopes in Park City, Utah was cut short seven years ago when she had to take some time to rest after colliding with another person coming down the hill.

As she was climbing the hill on February 26, 2016, another skier rammed her from behind. She suffered minor injuries, for which, she says, the man immediately apologized.

According to her, Terry Sanderson, 76, a retired optometrist, said he couldn’t remember exactly what happened after the “full-body hit.” But for Ms. Paltrow, the incident is as clear as day.

His version of events is slightly different.

Who is plaintiff Terry Sanderson?

The incident happened on February 26, 2016 on the slopes of Flagstaff Mountain, part of the Deer Valley Resort near Park City, Utah, when Paltrow and Dr. Terry Sanderson collided at a beginner’s class known as the Bandana Run.

Mr. Sanderson subsequently filed compensatory damages in January 2019, seeking $300,000 in damages for the injuries sustained, prompting Paltrow to file a counterclaim, seeking a token $1 in the event of her winning and covering her demands legal costs.

Mr Sanderson insists the movie star crashed into him on the slopes after speeding “out of control” down a hill, according to Court TV.

She hit him in the back with such force that he was left with “a permanent craniocerebral trauma, four broken ribs, pain, suffering, loss of zest for life, mental stress and disfigurement”.

In his lawsuit, the plaintiff argues that Paltrow “got up, turned around, and drove away” and left him “stunned, lying in the snow, badly injured” without calling for help.

The actor’s attorney, Stephen Owens, told the court that the trip she took to Deer Valley was “a sentimental affair” for Paltrow after her father’s death in 2002.

“So it was a sentimental thing because she had started skiing again and she did it because she wanted her children to learn the way she had,” Mr Owens said in his opening statement.

He told the court that Ms Paltrow’s current husband, Mr Falchuk, 52, was also present in Utah on the day of the accident.

“And [Falchuk] has children the exact same age as Gwyneth’s daughter and son,” Mr Wens told the court. “And this was really her first trip to having a mixed kind, to see if that could work. So it was a special time and a beautiful day.”

Mr Owens described the February 26, 2016 ski group as “her, Brad, now her husband you will hear from, her daughter Apple you will hear from, Moses you will hear from. ”
