Will Harry still be Duke of Sussex? The answer could rest on whether he can mend his broken relationship with the King and Prince William

  • There are questions as to whether Prince Harry should keep his title as Duke of Sussex
  • 44% of Brits say he should lose titles and 32% say he should keep them
  • The question rests on whether he can mend the relationship with William and King Charles

Questions about whether Prince Harry will be allowed to keep his official titles have raged since he retired from royal duties.

Now it seems to be a matter of whether he can mend his fractured relationship with his brother and father, which could strip him of formal titles – not just Duke of Sussex, but Earl of Dumbarton, which he uses in Scotland, and Baron Kilkeel, for Northern Ireland.

Last month – after the release of controversial Netflix series Harry & Meghan but ahead of the prince’s bombastic memoir – 44 per cent of Brits said he should be stripped of the titles, while 32 per cent said he should keep them.

The late Queen bestowed the Sussex title on her grandson in May 2018 when he married Meghan.

The title Baron of Kilkeel was created for Harry, while the original title Earl of Dumbarton was created in 1675 but ended in 1749.

When asked in a US TV interview this month if he would willingly give up his titles, the prince replied, “And what difference would that make?”

And Tory MP Bob Seely said earlier this month: “They seem to hate the institution of the royal family but seem perfectly happy to use their titles. Don’t use the titles to ruin the institution.’
