Who is more intelligent: a dog or a cat? Science has the answer Notice Contests Brazil

Science has advanced on the subject of animal intelligence and has drawn interesting conclusions on a controversial subject. Because who is smarter: dog or cat? Even if you have these animals at home and already have an opinion on the subject, there are data that deserve to be analyzed in more detail.

A study at Vanderbilt University in the US analyzed the neurological differences in pets. Therefore, in 2017 there was a slightly more precise answer to the intelligence of dogs and cats. In fact, data from several carnivorous animals were analyzed in the study.

Who is more intelligent: dogs or cats? Understand

According to the study, dogs have more than twice as much gray matter as cats. That means the brain is much larger, which isn’t impressive given that animals vary greatly in size.

However, it is worth remembering that the socalled “grey cells” are associated with thinking, reasoning, complex behavior and, most importantly, intelligence. Dogs have an average of 530 million cortical neurons, while cats have almost 250 million.

Humans, for example, have 86 billion neurons that make up the entire complex system that translates into human intelligence.

What does the data mean?

Practically speaking, the more neurons are watching, the higher the intelligence. Contrary to popular belief, the size of the brain is not directly related to the number of neurons present in it.

A golden dog, for example, has more neurons than, say, a lion, a brown bear, or a hyena. A bear’s brain is ten times larger than a cat’s, but it has almost the same number of neurons.

Another interesting fact was the finding that the fact that an animal is a carnivore is not directly related to the intelligence it possesses. Evolutionarily, it seems, herbivores had to adapt and become smarter in order to survive.
