Dispute in Europe about migrants. Ocean Viking, Humanity 1 and GeoBarents, NGO vessels that would house over 1000 migrants, have asked for a safe harbor from both our authorities and the Maltese authorities, but the request was not accepted. A tough standoff erupted in Berlin last night, urging Italy to “quickly” deal with migrants aboard Humanity 1, a German-flagged NGO ship. The Italian government replied that they would offer assistance but not grant disembarkation.

The conflict concerns the policy of redistribution of migrants in Europe, which, being voluntary, does not sufficiently involve the countries that should take care of the people on board.
