But what is the origin of this celebration?
In modern times, the origin of Mother’s Day dates back to May 1907, when Anna Jarvis wished to pay tribute to her mother, Anne Reeves Jarvis, after her death at a Methodist church in West Virginia. Thanks to Jarvis, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in the United States, and in 1914 then-President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday.
Mother’s Day in Colombia
Official recognition of Mother’s Day in Colombia came some eleven years later, when then-President Pedro Nel Ospina declared the second Sunday in May a National Mother’s Day throughout the territory, pursuant to Law 28 of 1925.
Despite the fact that the date for the celebrations of Mother’s Day has been set to this date according to this law, according to reports from Semana and other Colombian media, the celebrations in the department of Norte de Santander take place on the last Sunday of May.
Although this will not be the case in 2022 because the National Trade Association (Fenalco) of the Norte de Santander section has announced that it will change the date before the first round of the presidential elections.
