Viewers slammed the “clumsy” Baftas last night after a series of “cringe” moments left viewers reeling.
Those tuning in to the awards show were stunned by Ariana DeBose’s “cheesy” opening rap, Richard E Grant’s “flat jokes” and Alison Hammond’s “embarrassing” daytime TV interviews.
Some also criticized Luvvies’ “virtue signal” as many wore blue ribbons on the red carpet in solidarity with refugees and displaced people around the world.
At the 76th EE British Academy Film Awards, stars from the world of acting gathered at the Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the year’s best films.
But those watching at home slammed the show, questioning why the awards “feel so painful this year,” citing the “unexciting” nominations and “oddly flat” format.
Richard E Grant and Alison Hammond hosted the Baftas at the Royal Festival Hall last night
West Side Story star Ariana DeBose opened the awards show with a song dedicated to women, but many were quick to describe the performance as “painful” and “awkward.”
An embarrassing mix-up also led to Carey Mulligan standing up for the Best Supporting Actress award when the winner was Kerry Condon

Some viewers slammed the choice of presenters for this year’s Bafta awards
West Side Story star Ariana DeBose opened the awards show with a song dedicated to women, but many were quick to label the performance as “painful” and “awkward,” with one question, “Why did this happen?”
They also targeted this year’s hosts, This Morning presenter Alison Hammond, 48, who had been chosen to host the star-studded party, along with “nervous” Richard E Grant, 65.
While some viewers praised the “stunning” Hammond for her “absolutely fabulous” hosting skills, they said she made the show “easy to watch.”
However, others complained that Hammond “didn’t fit the event,” while others said the co-host pairing was like “chalk and cheese,” with Grant’s jokes “falling flat.”
Richard E Grant and Alison Hammond on stage during the Baftas
One viewer commented: “Alison Hammond made us switch off. Totally pointless daytime TV blathering from someone with no relevant acting history.’
Another said: “Which awakened visionary Luvvie brought Hammond and Grant together to present last night’s BAFTAS? Goosebumps TV … a total turnoff – who produced it?
During the ceremony, Hammond spent part of the time in a studio backstage interviewing the likes of Austin Butler, Emma Thompson and Dame Helen Mirren.
Viewers give their verdict on last night’s show: some said it was “just cringe”.
Some have blasted the choice of presenters, saying the show this year is “twitchy” and “painful to watch”.
In a poignant moment, Dame Helen paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, whom she portrayed in the 2006 biographical drama The Queen.
Afterward, she spoke to Hammond backstage, but some viewers were less than impressed by the “terrible and embarrassing” interview.
As he talked, Hammond asked Dame Helen, “Are we going out tonight, by the way?” Are we going to an after party?’ but she replied: ‘No, I have to get up at six in the morning.’
‘No parties tonight?’: Some viewers slammed Alison Hammond’s interview with Dame Helen Mirren after she asked her where she was partying
Hammond pressed, “So, no parties tonight?” to which the award-winning actress replied, “No, I have to go to Berlin.”
After the interaction, one person tweeted: “Can Alison Hammond actually let people have their say? What a waste of Helen Mirren. These “interviews” make you angry.”
Another said: “I don’t understand why we needed those pointless segments with Alison, they were so awkward, Helen Mirren actually looked a bit pissed off and I don’t understand why she came back on stage to only win four awards present. ‘
Viewers were also horrified by Ariana DeBose’s “cheesy” rap that celebrated the 2023 Bafta female nominees during the awards’ opening night.
No thanks: The star, who won the gong for Best Supporting Actress at last year’s ceremony for West Side Story, took the stage with a rap about the female nominees
The 32-year-old, who won the gong for Best Supporting Actress at last year’s West Side Story awards, took the stage with a rap about the female nominees.
The performance began with song as she was joined by dancers, who ripped her skirt off in impressive scenes before calling out members of the star-studded audience including Michelle Yeoh, Viola Davis and Jamie Lee Curtis.
After Ariana’s performance, one viewer wrote, “Laughing at Ariana DeBose’s BAFTA song why did this happen?”
With another adding: “Absolutely awful that she wouldn’t even be hit on [talent show] The voice’.
Others agreed with the writing: “It was awful” and “God awful.”
Another said: “I have plenty of time for the celebs who smiled charmingly and awkwardly during Ariana DeBose’s painful BAFTA rap”.
And: “Ariana DeBose does an absurd rap about the women who are ready for things. She’s such a pro (not a pro anymore) though, so it hardly matters.
Little Simz later performed her single Heart On Fire before music legend Joan Armatrading joined her on guitar in a surprise performance.
Fans raved about the duo, who wrote: “Electrifying performance from Little Simz and Joan Armatrading.”
With another addition: “Little Simz and Joan Armatrading? That’s more like it!’ and ‘Joan Armatrading is a legend’.
Cringe: Racing to Twitter fans labeled the performance as “painful” and “awkward,” with one asking “why did this happen?”
Stage: The performance began with song as she was joined by dancers who ripped her skirt off in impressive scenes before she listed members of the star-studded audience
With a fifth addition: “Joan Armatrading plays guitar and I’m immediately much more interested.
In another agonizing moment, Carey Mulligan was mistakenly crowned Best Supporting Actress winner at the 2023 EE BAFTA Film Awards and was halfway to the stage before the mistake was corrected.
The pregnant star, 37, looked “visibly shocked” when the gaffe was made by a sign language interpreter but managed to laugh at the mistake.
Last year’s winner, CODA star Troy Kotsur, 54, had presented the award in sign language but the slip was edited out of BBC One’s 30-minute delayed broadcast.
Hilarious: After Kerry answered the gong, host Richard E Grant joked: ‘Needs a defibrillator for Carey Mulligan’
A source in the audience told Web: “Carey was a really good sport and laughed at the mix-up. She looked visibly shocked when her name was revealed.’
Troy had correctly signed that Kerry Condon had won for her role in Banshees of Inisherin while Carey was in the running for her Me Too film She Said.
During the awards ceremony, Elvis star Austin Butler took home Best Actor at the awards, beating favorite Colin Farrell in a state of shock excitement.
The actor fought back tears as he paid tribute to the Presley family while accepting the honor after portraying the late King Of Rock in the Baz Lurhmann biopic.
Austin thanked the entire crew and team he worked with on the film and admitted he was “just trying to take it all in” as he choked back tears upon accepting the honors.
“It means everything to me,” Butler told the ceremony, still using the Elvis stretching tone he learned for Baz Luhrmann’s film.
He also paid tribute to the Presley family, who provided insight into Elvis’ life for the biopic, adding he “hopes he made them proud”.
Cate Blanchett also won Best Actress for her performance in the biopic Tar, the film’s only major win that night.
She tearfully accepted the gong as she thanked her mother and her director, Todd Field, adding that Blanchett also said 2022 was an “extraordinary year for women.”
Love it: Later in the show, however, Little Simz (left) wowed the audience with her “electrifying” performance as she took to the stage with Joan Armatrading (right).
She added that it broke down, that women’s experience was not “monolithic” and that her role as Lydia Tar was “a dangerous and potentially career-ending endeavor.”
Netflix’s German war epic All Quiet On The Western Front was the night’s big winner with a total of seven awards, including Best Picture, while The Banshees of Inisherin was a close second with five, including Best British Film and Best Supporting Actor or Actress.
The film, based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, tied with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001) as the highest-grossing BAFTA-nominated non-English film in history.
Directed by Edward Berger, Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow can be seen in the leading roles.
During his opening monologue, Richard referenced Will Smith’s infamous slap in the face at last year’s Oscars, telling the audience that “no one gets slapped under my watch tonight.”
Smith stormed onto the stage during the 94th annual Academy Awards in March and punched presenter Chris Rock after the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.
The actor, who shortly thereafter won the coveted Academy Award for Best Actor, was later banned from all Academy events for the next 10 years and resigned from the organization.
In a speech at the Baftas, Grant said the only slaps received on Sunday were “on the back.”
“What a great year to host the Baftas,” he said.
“In 2022, cinema audiences were truly back and there has never been a better time to go to the movies.”
He added: “Well not now, I’m trying my best and nobody on my watch gets slapped tonight… except on the back.”
As the ceremony began, Carey Mulligan was incorrectly announced as the winner of the Supporting Actress Award after a translation error while deaf actor Troy Kotsur was presenting.
Oscar winner Kotsur made the announcement via sign language before a communication error resulted in Mulligan’s name being called out for her appearance in She Said.
The announcer quickly corrected the announcement and announced The Banshees Of Inisherin star Kerry Condon as the winner.
Barry Keoghan won supporting actor for The Banshees Of Inisherin, and the 30-year-old Irish actor said he “really should have planned that” before thanking his co-stars and Ireland.
