Watch your tires, Spanish police warn of a new breed of theft on the roads

In this summer time, many holidaymakers travel to Spain by car. Local police recently drew attention to a new type of theft that is rampant at motorway service stations and tollbooths, reports La Dépêche du Midi, Monday August 8, 2022.

The thieves use a proven technique to deflate tires. While driving, they see their victim and wait until their vehicle is stationary, at a toll station or rest area. The crook sitting on the passenger side then uses this moment to get out unobtrusively and attack the right rear tire of the man in front.

Distract the victim’s attention

The victims, unaware of the maneuver, then continue driving while the tire gradually loses air. So they stop at the end. While one of the thieves pretends to help the target, his accomplice takes the opportunity to steal the contents of his vehicle. Concentrating on the tire, the victim doesn’t notice anything.

It was the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police officers, who spread this method on social networks. They also released videos of several of these scenes captured by CCTV cameras. We see thieves attacking different people on the street. Police are advising motorists to be vigilant and lock the doors when exiting.
