Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin on Sunday called voters “stupid” for blaming President Biden for his handling of rising gas prices.

Rubin shared an ABC News poll on Twitter that showed a majority of Americans disapproved of Biden’s handling of inflation. However, the vast majority of Americans also approved of Biden’s recent ban on Russian oil imports, despite the ban inevitably pushing up gas prices.

Rubin said the poll shows that voters are, in a nutshell, “stupid.”

“[V]In a nutshell, other (stupid) words: according to ABC News/Ipsos, 70% disapprove of Biden’s handling of gas prices, although even more respondents – 77% – support his proposal to ban Russian oil, even if it means paying more . at a gas station,” she tweeted.

Although the White House and its allies in the media have tried to blame Russian President Vladimir Putin for the ongoing inflation problems due to his invasion of Ukraine, inflation reports pointed to a record high in February, before the invasion. Even in December 2021, months before the invasion of Ukraine, inflation rose by 6.8%, the biggest one-off increase in almost 40 years.

Gas prices also reached record averages of over $4 a gallon. Biden and his administration blame the oil companies for price gouging rather than advocating increased domestic energy production.

Some in the media have criticized Republicans for blaming Biden for rising gas prices, arguing that they are using the ongoing crisis to score political points ahead of the midterms. Rubin, one such figure in the media, has criticized the GOP’s allegations of domestic drilling and the Keystone XL pipeline, which she says were “false” and “untruthful.”

In the same poll Rubin cites, the Biden administration has a disapproval rating for the economy of 58%, a 12-month high according to the data.
