War in Ukraine: Putin and the Strategy of the Winter

Since October 10, 2022, Russia has launched a bombing campaign in Ukraine, specifically targeting civilian infrastructure. So she wants to make winter an ally by plunging the Ukrainian population into darkness and cold. Above all, in this way she is trying to break the support of the Ukrainian people in power. But everything is not so simple. Temperatures were not as low as Russian strategists had hoped. And vice versa, the Ukrainian camp resists and responds.

How does the Ukrainian population react to these bombings and their consequences? Can this strategy restore the advantage over Russia? On the contrary, could winter be beneficial for the Ukrainian army?

In this episode of the “L’Heure du Monde” podcast, Cédric Pietralunga, journalist at Le Monde and responsible for the defense department, explains the tactical advantages – but also the limitations – of this strategy. Thomas d’Istria, who reports on the war in Ukraine for Le Monde, tells how the Ukrainian population is coping with the aftermath.

An episode of Adele Ponticelli. Production and music: Amandine Robillard. Presentation and Editor-in-Chief: Morgane Tual. In this episode: the testimony of Anastasiia Zubchuk recorded by Adèle Ponticelli; the Russian statements of January 2 and 4 after the bombing of Makiivka (Portal).
