08.45: HIV-positive Ukrainian refugees find help in Estonia

When Svitlana fled her war-torn Ukraine and then sought refuge in Estonia, she not only had to deal with the usual challenges of being a refugee, but also worried about her HIV treatment. This 45-year-old woman, whose husband unknowingly infected her when they met, has managed to keep her illness under control for years thanks to medication. Now in a new place, she needed to secure a new source of supply.

Luckily, in the refugee center she found information about the Estonian Network of People Living with HIV (EHPV), an NGO that offers them help. “I called a volunteer and told him about my problem (…) A few days later I got an appointment with the doctor and accompanied me there,” she recalls. “At the moment (…) I feel good, the test results are really good (…) My immunity is good and the viral load is zero,” says Svitlana. Estonia has one of the highest HIV transmission rates in Europe, but the situation has improved dramatically since the turn of the 21st century.
