War in Ukraine: A journalist reveals the location of a Wagner command headquarters

A pro-Russian war correspondent published photos of him with members of the private militia. This allowed Ukraine to locate and bombard the location.

A Russian war correspondent, Sergei Sreda, published photos of him on August 8 visiting the headquarters of the Wagner militia in the occupied town of Popasna in Ukraine’s Donbass. We would even see him shake hands with Yevgeny Prigozhin, a Russian oligarch close to Putin and the founder and owner of this private armed militia.

“I came to Popasna, I stopped at the headquarters. I was greeted as one of them. They told funny stories,” Sreda wrote, posting their photos, reports Ukrainian media UAWire. Except that these contained enough detail for the Ukrainian intelligence services to accurately locate this base.

The Ukrainian army responded by using their US Army HIMARS rocket launchers and announced that they had destroyed the headquarters. Russian Telegram channels have confirmed that the base was hit and photos have been released showing casualties being evacuated amid the rubble, according to the Chron. The adviser to the Minister of Interior of Ukraine also published these photos on his Twitter account this Sunday, August 14.

Was Yevgeny Prigozin there? Was he injured or killed? The testimonies are mixed and none of these facts could be verified. But the attack would have left many dead and injured among the mercenaries, UAWire says. Photos of Sergei Sreda were removed from his account after the strike.

The capture of Popasna on May 7 would be the most important feat of arms by the Wagner militia in Ukraine, where they are supporting Russian forces.
