On this occasion, Vladimir Putin announced that the frigate Admiral Gorchkov would soon be equipped with a new Zircon hypersonic cruise missile. This rocket “knows no obstacle,” the Kremlin master specified more than five months after the start of the war against Ukraine that Russia had started. Vladimir Putin pointed out in his speech that the Russian fleet “is capable of inflicting a lightning reaction on all those who decide to undermine our sovereignty and our freedom”. A range of 1000 km
The Zircon hypersonic cruise missile has been in testing since October 2020. It is said to have a maximum range of around 1,000 kilometers. It flies at Mach 9 to hit sea and land targets. The Russian President has described these new weapons as “invincible” in the past. The frigate Admiral Gorchkov will be equipped in the coming months.
On the front lines of the war in Ukraine, the Russian Black Sea Fleet on the annexed Crimean Peninsula was the target of a drone strike that injured six people on Sunday morning. The Russians accused “Ukrainian nationalists” and canceled the celebrations for security reasons. Ukraine has denied being behind the attack.
This is the first time the Russian authorities have reported such an attack since they began their offensive in Ukraine on February 24.
