Viola Davis is officially cast as the villain Dr. Volumnia Gaul cast in Hunger Games prequel The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes

It seems the odds are always in Viola Davis’ favor.

The 57-year-old actress was officially known as Dr. Cast Volumnia Gaul, the villain in the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents to the Hunger Games.

She has joined a cast that already includes West Side Story star Rachel Zegler, The Gilded Age actor Tom Blyth and Game Of Thrones star Peter Dinklage.

Nina Jacobson, a producer on the film, called Davis the creative team’s “dream” casting for the role.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have an actor of Viola’s exceptional reach and presence playing this pivotal role,” she told the publication.

Explaining the character, director Francis Lawrence said, “Dr. Gaul is as ferocious as he is creative, and as fearsome as he is awe-inspiring. Snow’s skill as a political actor evolves in no small part from his experience of her as the games’ most powerful character.”

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a 2020 book written by Suzanne Collins and centers around President Coriolanus Snow, played by Blyth in the upcoming film and Donald Sutherland in the original Hunger Games trilogy.

According to People, the official synopsis explains that Snow “has to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the tribute girl from impoverished District 12 could turn the odds in her favor. Combining their instinct for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and who is a snake.

In the original Hunger Games series, Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, also came from District 12, as did Josh Hutcherson’s character Peeta Mellark.

Davis is a highly decorated actress who has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe for her role in Fences, a Primetime Emmy for her work in How To Get Away With Murder, and two Tony Awards.

She has a number of projects in post-production including the untitled Nike film directed by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and the Dwayne Johnson-directed Black Adam film.

After filming her role in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Serpents, the Doubt actress will begin work as Harriet Tubman on an untitled project.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is scheduled for release on November 17, 2023.
