D’Onofrio first played the role in the former series Daredevil, which ran on Netflix from 2015 to 2018.

The actor opened up about the role in an interview with TV Line last December, saying his character’s story in Daredevil has continuity with what was portrayed in Hawkeye.

“That’s how I played him in it,” he said, adding, “I think that was the general idea.”

He said of the character, “Obviously on the show he’s physically stronger and can take more physical abuse, but emotionally and as far as the story was discussed as to what was going on, it was about getting as many points as possible with Daredevil and to join Hawkeye.

“There are obviously things we can’t connect; In terms of the way I play him and the story I carry myself into Hawkeye, he’s the same guy.”

The veteran actor said of playing Kingpin/Wilson Fisk, “There are many facets of the character that could be explored.”

When asked about the creative changes he’s made to his character, including using a cane, the actor said, “I’m a huge fan of this stuff, so you know, like all the fans out there, and that’s why it was great, I mean everything serious made sense to me because the last time you saw me in Daredevil there was a pretty brutal fight between him and Daredevil – and so the cane made sense to me.

He said of his character’s interactions with the character Maya Lopez, “The thing about Wilson Fisk is that people always assume what he’s actually thinking, and that’s the cool thing about it – there’s a way to play this character, at who you just don’t know if he really feels anything but his own narcissism.”

D’Onofrio said of the character’s long-term prospects, “I have hope that he will continue — for selfish reasons, because I love playing the character so much — but I also think there are many facets of the character that stand out.” history could be explored.’

The series is slated to premiere on Disney+ in summer 2023.
