VIDEO. Two children’s bodies found in suitcases auctioned off in New Zealand

A macabre discovery. The remains of primary school children were discovered in two suitcases being auctioned off in New Zealand. “The remains were probably in two equally sized pieces of luggage for several years,” Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua told a news conference. The victims are said to be between five and ten years old.

The suitcases were in a trailer full of loose items that an Auckland family had bought at a storage auction days earlier. According to the BBC, customers of this type of sale often ignore the details of the items before placing a bid, hoping to discover valuable goods in these storerooms. But on August 11, a strong odor emanating from this family’s famous trailer alerted neighbors and led to the macabre discovery.

After the bodies were found, a murder investigation was launched. “The investigative team is working very hard to hold accountable the person or persons who caused the deaths of these children (…) We reiterate that the residents of the Avenue Moncrieff property (the suitcase buyers, ed .) not related to them the death of children. They are of course upset and have asked for their privacy to be respected,” said Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua, noting that identifying the victims is the police priority at the moment. A largely complicated task as the bodies appear to have been hidden inside for several years.
