According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2022 (ARWU), published on August 15 by Chinese consulting firm Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, USP is among the top 150 universities in the world. The ranking evaluated more than 2,500 institutions and ranked the top 1,000.
Harvard took the top spot for the 20th consecutive year, followed by Stanford. With the exception of the English universities of Cambridge (4th place) and Oxford (7th place), all other institutions making the top ten places are North American.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects evaluated more than 5,000 universities in 54 focus areas
In addition to USP, Brazilian companies include the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) in the 301400 group and the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp) in the 401500 group the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). A total of 21 Brazilian universities appear on the list.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published since 2003, is considered one of the forerunners of university rankings. The ranking uses six indicators to evaluate institutions, including the number of Nobel Prizewinning alumni and faculty, the number of mostcited researchers, the number of articles published in impact journals, the number in the Science Citation Index Expanded and in the Social indexed article Sciences Citation Index and research output per capita relative to institution size.
