USA: This high school’s lights have been on for more than a year after a glitch

The waste of money and energy should end soon, and work is planned for the coming weeks.

A grotesque situation that lasted almost a year and a half. In the United States, a public high school in the state of Massachusetts is faced with a situation that is as painful as it is paradoxical: the 7,000 light bulbs that make up the facility’s lighting system are constantly on and literally cannot be turned off.

Originally, Minnechaug Regional High School’s lighting system was designed to conserve energy. But since the failure of the computer system that manages this network, on August 24, 2021, the installation has proved particularly expensive, on the contrary, at all levels.

Delays due to the Covid pandemic?

“The lighting system has gone into default mode,” summarizes Deputy Superintendent Aaron Osborne, quoted by NBC News. And that default position keeps the light on automatically.” Property managers contacted the company that installed the lights… and found that it had since been resold several times.

After school management finally managed to contact the current head of the company in question, school management took steps to repair the lighting system, but as NBC News explains, these were delayed by various setbacks, administrative deadlocks and other delivery delays that appear to be related to the Covid pandemic.

The situation would cost “several thousand dollars a month on average.”

The unsustainable situation has therefore existed for almost a year and a half. “We are fully aware that this is costing taxpayers a significant amount of money,” said Assistant Superintendent Aaron Osborne. And we have continued to do everything we can to solve this problem.”

“I would say the net impact is several thousand dollars per month on average,” says the administrator. However, this unfortunate waste of public money and energy should come to an end in the coming weeks. After the arrival in December 2022 was postponed again, the service provider in charge of repairing the lighting system should intervene in February.
