Joe Biden is once again faced with the discovery of confidential documents at one of his family residences. “The Department of Justice during a Friday, January 20 the state of Delaware said in a press release released on Saturday, January 21, Bob Bauer, his personal attorney.

Joe Biden’s lawyer specifies that the files in question correspond to two phases in the political life of the 80-year-old Democrat: on the one hand, his long career of more than thirty years as a Delaware Senator and, on the other hand, his position as Vice President of Barack Obama, between 2009 and 2017 .

Joe Biden and his wife were not present at the search. They also spent the weekend at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The US president’s personal attorneys previously searched the Rehoboth Beach residence and said they found no official documents or classified records.

Nonetheless, this new discovery on Friday adds a series of revelations that put the White House in a very delicate position. Joe Biden had already admitted through his lawyers on January 9 that confidential documents had already been discovered in November 2022 in a Washington think tank where he had an office. Then, on Jan. 12, the Democratic President admitted that more sensitive files had been found at his home in Wilmington.

However, a 1978 law requires US presidents and vice presidents to send all their emails, letters, and other working documents to the National Archives.

The case is particularly embarrassing for the US President, who wants to declare himself a candidate for the 2024 presidential election. On a trip to California a few days ago, he tried to quell the outcry over the discovery of these documents.

“Listen, we found some documents (…) that were kept in the wrong place, we immediately turned them over to the archives and the Justice Department,” Joe Biden told reporters who questioned him on the issue. “I have no regrets,” he said.

Unlike Donald Trump

His lawyers assure on the one hand that the 46th President of the United States “accidentally” took these sensitive files with him, and on the other hand emphasize that he is fully cooperating with the judiciary.

“The President made a commitment from the start to be responsible about this because he takes this seriously,” White House Attorney Richard Sauber said on Saturday. “The President’s attorneys and the Office of the White House Counsel will continue to work with the Justice Department and the Special Counsel to ensure this process is conducted quickly and efficiently,” he added.

While the two cases are not entirely comparable, the issue is nonetheless dangerous for Joe Biden, who presents himself as a rigorous and rule-abiding president.

In the case of Donald Trump, as in the case of Joe Biden, to avoid any accusation of bias, the Justice Department has appointed special prosecutors to examine the confidential documents.
