On a visit to El Paso, Texas, New York Mayor Eric Adams urged the US government to take action on migrant entry because his city could not accommodate more.
Adams urged the federal government to “do its job” with cities like his forced to cater to thousands of undocumented immigrants being bused away from the southern border.
“New York can’t take any more,” Adams said, according to the New York Times.
The mayor stressed that the immigration crisis could lead to cuts in basic services in the city, which faces other challenges such as homelessness.
He also pointed out that immigrant services could cost him as much as $2 billion, a higher number than estimates from previous years.
“Based on our forecasts, we assume that we can no longer accommodate asylum seekers and have submitted an application to the state for mutual emergency assistance,” he said.
“We expect more from our national leaders to really address this,” Adams said, according to the Times.
President Joe Biden issued new measures a few days ago to ease the flow of immigrants across the southern border, but several representatives and the Republican majority in Congress are calling for more measures.
Next, Republican governors of border states bused thousands of migrants to Democrat-run cities, including New York, Washington, DC and Chicago, in protest at the Biden administration’s immigration stance.
Adams begged Texas officials to end the practice, but in October he was forced to declare a state of emergency due to the influx of migrants.
The number of people crossing the US-Mexico border increased dramatically during Biden’s first two years in office.
In fiscal year 2022, which ended September 30, there were more than 2.38 million entries, exceeding two million for the first time.
