The shooting erupted in a city in Los Angeles County, California on Saturday night. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate Chinese New Year.
A shooting occurred around 10 p.m. local time (7 a.m. Sunday French time) on Saturday night in Monterey Park, a city about six miles east of Los Angeles in the United States, on the fringes of the Chinese New Year’s Eve celebrations, US media reported on Sunday.
Citing police sources, the Los Angeles Times named more than a “dozen” victims without specifying the death toll at the end of the morning. The City News Service press agency reported that there were dead and injured, quoting the authorities without making an assessment.
“This is an isolated case,” the sheriff’s deputy told the City News Service.
A crowd gathered
The Los Angeles County Sheriff confirmed a shooting occurred Saturday, according to CBS. The identity of the shooter is not known at this time.
The owner of a restaurant across the street from the alleged crime scene told the Los Angeles Times that he saw an armed man armed with a large supply of ammunition. Three people came to seek refuge at his facility.
According to the first testimonies and videos circulated on social networks, the shooting took place on an outdoor dance floor.
According to the Los Angeles Times, tens of thousands of people had previously gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The City News Service reports that the shooting happened about an hour after a Lunar New Year celebration ended.
