USA: Man kills himself after hitting Capitol without harming others

Tension drops on the Capitol side. A man killed himself early Sunday morning after driving into a barricade near the building where the US Congress meets in Washington. The man also fired multiple times in the air without causing injury, Capitol Police said.

“Just after 4 a.m., a man drove his car into an anti-vehicle barricade on East Capitol Street and Second Street,” just behind the U.S. Supreme Court and a stone’s throw from the Capitol, according to a statement from the U.S. Police Department Capitol on Sunday morning.

“Otherwise no one was hurt”

The car caught fire and the man got out before beginning to fire in the air. When police heard the gunshots, police approached the man, but he then killed himself by pointing his gun at himself. “Other people were not injured,” the statement said. The background of the man in question, who could not be identified, is being investigated.

It did not appear to target members of Congress, who are currently on furlough, Capitol Police noted. This building has been under strict protection since the January 6, 2021 attack by Donald Trump supporters protesting the results of the presidential election. The same is true of the Supreme Court, especially since its decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion.
