US Deputy Harris at the Security Conference: "Putin failed"

US Vice President Harris reiterated US support for Ukraine. At the Munich Security Conference, she said Putin had failed in his attempt to divide the West.

The US will support Ukraine in the fight against Russia for as long as necessary. This was said by US Vice President Kamala Harris at the Munich Security Conference. “America knows the importance of independence,” Harris said. That is why your country will continue to play a leading role in supporting Ukraine. Time is not on the side of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Harris recalled the situation a year ago, when the US warned precisely of this attack a few days before the Russian invasion. “Many wonder what the West’s response would be. A year later, we know: Kiev is still standing, Russia is weakened and the transatlantic alliance is stronger than ever.” Putin has failed in his attempt to divide the West.

Harris warns against imitators

The Russian invasion is an attack on common values. Russia committed crimes against humanity. “Those responsible will be held accountable,” Harris said. “Justice must be done.” Among other things, she referred to the atrocities in Bucha, believed to have been committed by Russian soldiers.

Harris said the US also has a “significant strategic interest” in countering the Russian attack on Ukraine because the war has global implications. “No country is safe when one country can violate the territorial integrity of another. Sovereign countries have a right to exist.” Boundaries cannot be pushed back by force. “If Putin is successful with this attack, other countries may be encouraged to follow this violent example.”

Harris also warned China not to help Russia militarily. To do so would only encourage China’s aggression, she said. Since the Russian attack, Moscow and Beijing have intensified their relations. Any move by China in that direction “would reward aggression, keep killing and further undermine a rules-based order.”
