WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (Sputnik) The Biden administration is considering providing Ukraine with the weapons necessary to attack the Crimean peninsula, an area that has proven instrumental in Russia’s moves during the ongoing special military operation, the New York Times reported.

The US government believes that if Ukraine’s military can threaten Russia’s control of Crimea, Kiev’s position will be improved in future negotiations, although such a move could increase the risk of the conflict escalating, Wednesday’s report said.

Government officials are discussing with their Ukrainian counterparts the use of USsupplied weapons, including High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and Bradley Fighting Vehicles, to cover targets such as the main land bridge connecting Crimea to the rest of Russia, the report added.

So far, the Biden administration has been reluctant to supply Ukraine with the longrange missiles Kyiv would need for an attack on Crimea for fear that such a move could provoke Russia and widen the conflict, the report said.
