The Pentagon this Friday (19) announced a new military aid package for Ukraine totaling $775 million, days before the end of Russia’s sixmonth invasion.

Also this Friday, a delegation of mayors of European cities belonging to Eurocities, the largest liaison network of its kind between mediumsized and large cities in the European Union, traveled to Kyiv to conclude an agreement on the reconstruction of Ukrainian localities destroyed by the war .

The group, led by Florence Mayor Dario Nardella, met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and then with Kiev Municipal Mayor Vitaly Klitschko, who is also President of the Association of Ukrainian Cities.

The group of mayors also visited devastated areas such as Bucha, Irpin and Borodyanka, scenes of massacres of civilians during the roughly monthlong occupation by Russian troops.

“We, the mayors and leaders of European and Ukrainian cities, condemn the Russian war in Ukraine and demand the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces and the restoration of peace. We commit to pooling our efforts to prepare and deliver rapid and sustainable recovery of cities. Ukrainian forces destroyed by Russian attacks,” read the joint statement at the end of the meetings.

Nardella said Eurocities wanted “to offer the Ukrainian people hope, support and solidarity for a peaceful and democratic future”. “We mayors are the public figures closest to the people and we brought with us that closeness and solidarity of citizens across Europe,” he added.
