United States: House of Worship Protection Panel begins work

A panel of interfaith officials and law enforcement experts commissioned by the US Department of Homeland Security began work to protect places of worship today, Kathpress said.

The Faith Based Security Advisory Council (FBSAC) has 25 members. The US government commissioned the council in July, just before the 10th anniversary of the gun attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. Seven people were killed at the time.

The panel is tasked with making recommendations to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to improve the security of places of worship. In recent years, the number of attacks on churches, synagogues, mosques and temples has increased significantly. According to the FBI, the number increased by about 35% between 2014 and 2018 alone.
