A piece of a human foot was found in a hot spring in Yellowstone National Park, the US National Park, which is investigating the circumstances, said on Friday. Part of the foot, which was inside a shoe, was discovered Tuesday by an agent in the Abyss Pool, one of the deepest natural pools of hot water (60C) in the park.
The first elements of the investigation conducted by the Park Police “suggest that an event involving a person probably took place at Abyss Pool on the morning of July 31, 2022”it says in the statement. “As of this writing, the Park believes this is not a foul play. Investigations into the circumstances of death are ongoing.” added the park.
Frequent accidents in this geothermal park
This is not the first tragic accident in this mythical national park in the American West, the oldest in the country. In 2016, a young man died after falling from a footbridge into another hot spring, and last year two people suffered similarly severe burns.
Authorities again reminded visitors to stay on the trails and “ be extremely careful” near geothermal areas.
Larger than most French departments and spanning the states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana (northwest), Yellowstone National Park welcomed 4.8 million visitors in 2021. Known for its geothermal activity, the park is home to about half of the world’s active geysers.
