Union headquarters calls tomorrow for a nationwide strike against the government of Peru

The General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) is finalizing the details of the nationwide strike called for tomorrow, Thursday 19 January, to demand the immediate resignation of President-elect Dina Boluarte, early calling of new elections and a Constituent Assembly .

The basic concentration is scheduled to take place in Lima’s Plaza 2 de Mayo from 4pm local time, which is why various trade union and social organizations have marched to the capital to join.

For its part, the CGTP condemned the police’s pressure on the National Assembly of Peoples (ANP) on Monday by surrounding the building and threatening conveners.

In this sense, the Confederation pointed out that the police forces intimidated the participants in the gathering and arrested the President Teresa Yamile Natividad Villegas Montoya on “an accusation in Cajamarca, a place she does not know, for a case of homonymy”.

For his part, the Deputy Secretary General of the CGTP, Gustavo Minaya, confirmed that “they are harassing the leaders who intend to enter this place convened by the National Assembly of the Peoples for all the leaders and union leaders of Lima and at the national level ” .

However, Minaya stressed that the strike would be carried out violently “yes or yes” while denouncing that “this is the way they are trying to stop this big strike because of the outrage, the dead and the lives they have. to prevent these own troops withdrawn”.

Demonstrations erupted in Peru last December as then-President Pedro Castillo was ousted by Congress, with around 50 deaths reported as a result of violent police repression.
