Paris, 19 January (EFE).- UNESCO will dedicate Education Day 2023 to Afghan girls and women after the Taliban regime banned them from secondary and university education.

The organization’s Director General, Audrey Azoulay, decided to do this because “no country in the world should prevent women and girls from getting an education. Education is a universal human right that must be respected,” read a statement released on Thursday. from UNESCO.

She added that “The international community has a responsibility to ensure that the rights of Afghan girls and women are restored without delay. The war on women must end.”

During an event to be held on the 24th at the UN headquarters in New York, Unesco (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) will reiterate its call for the “immediate restoration” of girls’ and women’s right to education.

The UN Secretary-General, the President of the Organization’s General Assembly and Azoulay herself will attend the event, where the first round table will be dedicated to the education of Afghan girls and women.

In recent weeks, the Taliban regime has banned women’s access to higher education (after expelling them from secondary school), restricting their work and freedom of movement.

This means that 80 percent of Afghan school-age girls and young women (2.5 million) are currently out of school.

These decisions “threaten to undermine the country’s development progress over the past 20 years,” lamented UNESCO.

Since August 2021, with the return of the Taliban to power, Unesco has adapted its approach in that country, for example with distance learning through the Afghan media, especially radio stations, which reach two-thirds of the population and directly.

Thanks to numerous donors, UNESCO supports broadcasters in the production of content of public interest, such as humanitarian, health and educational topics, with the aim of reaching at least six million people, especially women and girls. EFE
