Ukraine says it found 200 bodies in a building’s basement

The bodies of 200 people were found in the basement of a residential building in Mariupol, Ukrainian authorities said on Tuesday (24th). According to Petro Andryushchenko, a city councillor, workers were digging in the rubble of the building when they discovered the bodies.

According to Andryushchenko, the bodies were abandoned by Russian troops after villagers refused to collect them. The stench of decaying corpses disturbs the few residents who remained in the city, now occupied by Russian troops. According to the aide, this could be one of the deadliest attacks of the war.

Mariupol was relentlessly bombed during a nearly threemonth siege that ended last week after some 2,500 Ukrainian militants evacuated a steel mill where they were resisting the Russian invasion. Russian forces have already controlled the rest of the city, which is home to around 100,000 people who face shortages of food, water, heat or electricity.

At least 21,000 people were killed in the siege, according to Ukrainian officials who accused Russia of trying to cover up the horrors by introducing mobile cremators and burying the dead in mass graves.
