US approves $2.5 billion in military aid to Ukraine
The United States authorizes the delivery of another $2.5 billion worth of arms to Ukraine. The American media reported on this, emphasizing that, among other things, 90 Stryker armored vehicles and 59 Bradley combat vehicles will be sent.
In a tweet, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanks US President Joe Biden for the new military aid package. “I thank Biden – he writes – for providing Ukraine with another powerful defense support package worth $2.5 billion.” Important in our fight against the aggressor – he adds – Thank you Americans, for the constant support of the leadership”.
However, the US arms package does not include the long-range ATA missiles requested by Ukraine. Flying up to 300 kilometers, the missiles could allow Ukraine to hit Russian supply routes and depots far behind the front lines that current Himars missile systems cannot reach. Western partners fear Ukraine could use the long-range weapons to penetrate deep into Russian territory or Crimea – a peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014 – although Kyiv has promised that will not be the case. The Kremlin has warned the conflict could escalate to a “whole new level” if the West meets Ukraine’s recent demands for longer-range weapons.
