British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US Vice President Kamala Harris condemned countries that backed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s efforts in Ukraine, Sunak’s office said, calling the war “a global war”.

“Prime Minister and Vice President Harris have condemned countries that have politically and militarily supported Putin’s efforts,” his office said in a statement after a meeting at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

“They agreed that Putin’s war on Ukraine is a global war, both in terms of its impact on food and energy security and in terms of its impact on internationally accepted norms such as sovereignty,” the statement added.

The meeting, which brings together dozens of world leaders, showed how the US and Europe view the conflict. Washington officially accused Russia of “crimes against humanity” for the first time.

“We have reviewed the evidence, we know the norms of the law and there is no doubt that these are crimes against humanity,” Kamala Harris told the other leaders.

To prove his thesis, Harris cited the following cases that Washington said were committed by Russian military personnel in Ukraine:

  • summary executions;
  • Torture;
  • Rape;
  • “Transfer” of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians to Russia without their consent.

“I say to everyone who committed these crimes and their superiors or accomplices: they will answer for them,” added Kamala Harris.
