Two killed in chemical plant explosion in China

State media said two people were killed and 34 injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in China. According to state broadcaster CCTV, the detonation took place yesterday afternoon at a factory in the northeastern province of Liaoning.

Twelve people are still missing, the broadcaster said, citing local authorities. More than 330 firefighters were mobilized.

The fire is now under control, he said. Photos and videos released by CCTV showed thick smoke and flames billowing from the factory.

Industrial accidents are common in China due to non-compliance with already lax safety standards. In December, 18 miners were buried when a gold mine collapsed in the Xinjiang region.
