Two injured after another attack near Jerusalem’s old city

There was a gun attack near the Old City of Jerusalem. Just one day after the synagogue attack that killed seven people.

A day after the bloody attack outside a synagogue in East Jerusalem, two people were injured in another gun attack near Jerusalem’s old city. In an emergency call at 10:42 am (09:42 am CET), there was talk of a terrorist attack in the Silwan district in the eastern part annexed by Israel, Israeli rescue service Magen David Adom said. Thus, there were “two wounded on the spot”.

Two men aged 47 and 23 suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body, their condition was “moderate to severe”, an emergency services spokesman said. The victims were conscious and were taken to the hospital.

According to the police, the alleged killer was “neutralized”. Whether he was wounded or killed remains to be seen. Public broadcaster Kan reported that the attacker was only 13 years old.

The two seriously injured men were taken to hospital for treatment, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service. According to media reports, he is father and son.

The previous night, during Shabbat, a Palestinian assailant opened fire outside a synagogue in east Jerusalem, killing seven people before being killed by police after a brief chase.

Police on high alert

Police were placed on high alert after the attack. Israel Police Chief Kobi Shabtai spoke of “one of the worst attacks in years”. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced “immediate countermeasures”.

After the terrorist attack, Israeli police arrested at least 42 suspects. These were relatives and neighbors of the killer, police said on Saturday. It remains unclear whether the detainees are accused of involvement in the attack or in its preparation.

Assailant killed during escape

The assailant shot dead seven people near a synagogue on Friday, International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Several people were injured. According to police, the assailant was killed while trying to flee.

Internationally, the attack has raised concerns about a further escalation of violence in the Middle East. On Saturday night, the Israeli security cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Netanyahu, wanted to deal with the situation.
