TV ratings for Tuesday, January 17: ‘Night Court’ revival on NBC

Let me be the only person on the internet to say, “The verdict is in” — NBC’s Night Court Revival is looking like a hit.

With CBS’s well-watched FBIs in repeat mode this week, NBC’s sitcom “New-Boot” (as co-lead/EP Melissa Rauch likes to call it) debuted Tuesday night – mind you as a self-starter – on 7.4 million total viewers and a nearly unheard-of demo- rating of 1.0. A second installment then drew 6.8 million and a 0.9. I’m looking for superlatives, but this has got to be one of NBC’s most-watched non-sports things in a minute.

TO UPDATE: Night Court is now the #1 broadcast premiere of the 2022-23 season in both 18-49 demo and total viewership. Additionally, the premiere delivered the highest total audience for any comedy series premiere since ABC’s The Conners in 2018, and the best for an NBC laffer since Will & Grace itself was revived in 2017.

TVLine readers gave the premiere an average grade of “2-“, so…we’ll see what the future brings!

The penultimate hour of New Amsterdam leading out of Night Court maintained 3.4 million and a .4, hitting season highs), although the series finale proper rose to 2.8 million/.3 (and a reader’s rating of “B “; see post mortem #1) and 2).

Fox’s The Resident ended its season (series?) with 2.9 million and a 0.4, which represents one of the better viewing figures of the season while hitting its season high in the demo. TVLine readers gave the finale a rare average grade of “A+”; Read the post-mortem/renewal forecast.

On ABC, The Rookie (4.6m/0.6) rose week-on-week, while GLAAD Awards nominee The Rookie: Feds (2.9m/0.3) remained flat. Will Trent (3.2m/0.3) added a few eyeballs in week 3 while remaining stable in the demo.

NEXT TUESDAY: The Winchesters return, now at 9pm!

The Live+Same Day numbers reported in our ratings column do not reflect the overall performance of a show due to the increasing use of delayed playback via DVR and streaming platforms, as well as viewing outside the home. These numbers (Nielsen Fast Nationals unless designated Finals) instead aim to simply illustrate trends or superlatives. This is just an exhibition, this is not a competition. Please no bets.
