Turkey, trucks in the crowd: 16 dead

At least 16 people were killed and 29 injured, eight seriously, in a new serious accident that occurred in Turkey less than 24 hours after the rear-end collision in the Gaziantep region that claimed the same number of victims. The new incident took place in Derik, in the Mardin province in the south-east of the country, where a truck driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into the crowd.

“We are shocked by this second accident,” said Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca, explaining that the accident was caused by a failure of the truck’s brakes, according to initial findings. The dynamics of the accident are also similar to Gazientep: the truck landed on a team of rescuers and others who rushed to the aid of vehicles involved in a previous accident.

Meanwhile, the Gaziantep governor confirmed that another 16 people died in the accident, which was caused by a bus colliding with emergency vehicles and rushing to an earlier accident, including three firefighters, four health workers and two reporters. 21 people were injured.
