Turkey: First freighter loaded with wheat leaves Ukraine

For the first time since the resumption of agricultural exports across the Black Sea, a freighter loaded with wheat has left Ukraine, according to Turkish sources.

The “Sormovsky” left the port of Chornomorsk with more than 3,000 tonnes of grain on board and is on its way to northwest Turkey, the Defense Ministry in Ankara said. So a ship loaded with 60,000 tons of corn left another Ukrainian port on Friday.

14 ships left the ports

That means 14 ships have left Ukrainian ports since the Turkey-UN-brokered deal between Russia and Ukraine. Unlike the current delivery of wheat, the ships have so far been mostly loaded with grain for animal feed or energy production. In Ukraine, millions of tonnes of grain have been stranded in Black Sea ports since the Russian attack in late February, which has led to rising prices and shortages in some mostly poorer countries.
