Donald Trump must pay for hasty Russiagate charges against Hillary Clinton, according to a Florida judge. The former US president – along with one of his lawyers – was fined nearly $1 million for suing his rival in 2016.

The fine was handed down by a Florida judge, who in a statement accused Trump of abusing the courts by filing frivolous lawsuits for political enrichment, which he says undermines the rule of law and amounts to an obstruction of justice.

US District Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks also determined that we are dealing with a lawsuit that should never have been filed, was completely frivolous in both fact and law, and was brought in bad faith for an improper purpose. The ruling ordered Trump and his attorney, Alina Habba, to pay nearly $938,000 to the defendants in the case. Middlebrooks previously dismissed a lawsuit Trump filed against Clinton, former senior FBI officials and the Democratic Party, dismissing the former president’s claims that they and others conspired to crush his successful presidential campaign by Alleged ties to Russia.

Last year, finding this fact cost the Clinton campaign a Federal Election Commission (FEC) sanction for failing to accurately report campaign funds spent on commissioning the document. However, Judge Donald M. Middlebrooks dismissed the documents presented by Trump’s attorneys as a 200-page political manifesto and accused the former president and his attorneys of siphoning resources from those who actually suffered legal damages. The judge also called Trump the mastermind of a strategic abuse of the legal process, which he allegedly repeatedly used to take revenge on his political opponents. Trump’s lawyers have already anticipated their intention to appeal the verdict.
