Former President Donald Trump has settled a lawsuit filed by a group of protesters who say they were beaten by Republican private security forces during his 2015 presidential campaign.

The two sides, who agreed as a jury, were selected for a civil trial in a New York courtroom, one of a spate of legal entanglements involving the former president.

Details of the transaction were not disclosed.

“While we were keen to go to court to demonstrate the frivolity of this case, the parties ultimately came to an amicable settlement,” said Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba. ‘We are very pleased with this result and look forward to finally settling this matter once and for all.’

The lawsuit was filed by five New Yorkers of Mexican descent. It is alleged that Trump’s bodyguards attacked them in front of his Manhattan skyscraper on September 3, 2015, while protesting negative comments Trump had made about Mexico and Mexican immigrants. News reporters recorded the guards snatching placards from the hands of the protesters and then tussling with some of them.

“Mighty men may write their names on buildings, but the sidewalk will always belong to the people,” plaintiff attorney Benjamin Dictor said in an email after the settlement was announced.

“The defendants stared down the barrel of a Bronx jury that was about to present overwhelming evidence in support of the plaintiffs’ claims. Nonetheless, the plaintiffs are proud to have settled their claims and received a written acknowledgment of their right to protest on the public sidewalk from Donald Trump,” said Dictor.

Trump sat a year ago for a testimony that would have been played for the jury at trial.

Trump was a defendant in the lawsuit along with his company, the Trump Organization, his presidential campaign and his security personnel.

Among other things, the plaintiffs asked Trump to pay punitive damages, arguing he should have known the security personnel would act “negligently or recklessly.”

Trump’s lawyers had resisted letting him sit the testimony. During his tenure, they argued that there had to be “extraordinary circumstances” to remove a senior government official.

Bronx Judge Doris Gonzalez, who presided over the case, dismissed that argument, saying it doesn’t apply because Trump is being called to account for conduct outside of office.
