Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts joined Greg Sharpe for his show on Tuesday night’s Sports Nightly. The former Husker linebacker made his biggest announcement earlier in the show when he revealed that Saturday’s Nebraska-Indiana football game sold out for the 386th straight season at Memorial Stadium.

“The Indiana game is going to be a sell-out and I’m really, really proud of that,” said Alberts. “I am thankful and thankful to our fans. We’ve said it’s going to be week by week and we’re making great progress with the rest of the home games. But Husker Nation continues to only react.

“I’m just so grateful to our fans and I just want to ask them to keep supporting these young men.”

The additional announcement included giving Herbie Husker a new look for 2023. Alberts discussed the decision to give the original Herbie some sort of makeover to try to rebrand and sell new merchandise.

According to Alberts, a “modernized” version of Herbie Husker will be “complete with corn and overalls.” Alberts hopes the new logo and merchandise will be ready by early 2023.

Alberts also revealed plans to renovate Memorial Stadium ahead of its 100th season of hosting Nebraska Football. This Friday, the Board of Regents will vote on a plan proposed by Alberts and his staff. The changes Alberts is proposing come largely from the fan poll, which 22,000 people responded to last year.

“If we think about technology and how the fanbase has evolved, how are they consuming a live sporting event and how does technology relate to that,” Alberts said. “What does the fan attraction look like? What is the right size and how do we create and ensure the Memorial Stadium experience is one of the best in all of college football. This gives us the ability to do that job quietly, and I want to say that again, to our fans, the 22,000 people who responded to our poll.”

Some of these changes include a redesign of the east balcony, which will lose over 600 seats.

In other projects around campus, Alberts unveiled plans for new surfaces for both baseball and softball. The baseball team got a new playing field after 11 years. Softball also gets new turf in the outfield while adding a padded wall.

The new outdoor track across from the Devaney Center is built and ready for use. However, “phase two” of the new facility has yet to begin. Phase two includes the construction of grandstands and media work stations. However, that year’s inflation caused problems with construction, forcing Alberts to change gears and seek more donor help instead.

It’s a busy and exciting time following the Huskers as Nebraska goes through a long search for a national coach while also completing eight more regular-season games, and the volleyball program remains a favorite to win the national championship.
