The awards are based on more than 240 million customer reviews on the portal and this year went to over 1.3 million partner companies as well as 230 rental car providers and 58 providers of airport taxis. As in the previous year, Italy leads this ranking with a total of over 170.6 thousand awards, followed by Spain (108 thousand), France (103 thousand), Germany, Croatia, Poland, Great Britain, Greece, Brazil and the United States.
By extrapolating an average quality from these overall results, which takes into account the spatial and tourist dimensions of the individual areas, Booking creates a ranking by place and by region every year, both on an absolute level – i.e. in terms of international tourists – and on local level and then based on the ratings of the country or territory where the site is located. As explained by the company’s press office, the list of the world’s friendliest cities includes those destinations that have a large number of award-winning hotels and offer travelers from all over the world a wide choice. At the same time, nationally ranked travel destinations have a high proportion of award-winning properties, considering the size of the location under consideration. This way you can celebrate less touristy and lesser known destinations than others.
