quotToadzillaquot a quotmonstrousquot Giant cane toad weighing nearly 3kg

"Toadzilla" : a "monstrous" Giant cane toad weighing nearly 3kg discovered in Australia

A giant cane toad weighing 2.7 kg was discovered in Australia, in the Queensland region.

It’s the size of a human arm, weighs as much as a baby at birth, and could probably feed French people for days…here’s Crapaudzilla. Last week wildlife officers spotted an oversized cane toad chasing a snake in Conway National Park in Queensland, Australia, reports The Guardian. .

“I bent down and grabbed the toad. I couldn’t believe their size and weight,” said Kylee Gray, one of the rangers behind the discovery. “A cane toad this size will eat anything it can fit in its mouth, including insects, reptiles and small mammals,” she told Geo.

A record in sight

With 2.7 kg on the scales, “Crapaudzilla” could definitely go into the book of records. The heaviest toad found so far weighed 2.65 kg, reports BFM TV.

The guards were able to weigh this toad, which they referred to as a “monster” and earned the nickname “Toadzilla” (“Crapaudzilla” in French). Because of its size, it would be a female. Although its age is unknown, “this one has been around for a long time,” Kylee Gray said. These amphibians have a life expectancy of 15 years in the wild.

A future star of museums

Native to South America, the cane toad was introduced to Queensland in 1935 to control the spread of certain beetles, with devastating consequences for local wildlife. This extremely venomous invasive species can lay up to 30,000 eggs in one season and is causing the local extinction of some of its predators. For these reasons, the 2.7 kg animal was taken away by the rangers and then euthanized.

The “monster” could end up in the Queensland Museum, BFM TV specifies.
