NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Titans are hiring San Francisco 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon as their new general manager, sources told ESPN’s Dianna Russini and Jeff Darlington on Tuesday.

Carthon interviewed a panel of Titans executives Friday, including controlling owner Amy Adams-Strunk, for the job. He brings 15 years of experience to the Titans.

During his tenure at San Francisco, Carthon served as the 49ers’ Director of Pro Staff for five seasons before being named Director of Player Staff two seasons ago. The 49ers went to the Super Bowl and played in two NFC championship games in that span.

Carthon, 41, joined the 49ers after serving five seasons (2012-16) as director of pro staff with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams. Carthon also spent four seasons (2008-11) as a pro scout with the Atlanta Falcons. He joined the league as an undrafted rookie with the Indianapolis Colts in 2004 and played with the club through the 2006 season.

The 49ers will receive compensatory third-round picks in the next two drafts as part of the Rooney Rules incentive for teams to develop minority head coaching and GM candidates.

The Titans fired general manager Jon Robinson in November, citing disappointment with the roster’s overall direction as the reason. Carthon is tasked with changing things for a Titans team that ended the season on a seven-game losing streak that resulted in a 7th-10 record.

Carthon’s hiring comes a day after Titans director of player staff Monti Ossenfort was hired as the new general manager of the Arizona Cardinals. Ossenfort was also interviewed for the Titans’ GM job.
