Due to injury, Timo Werner will not be at the World Cup with Germany. His team, Leipzig, have announced this Thursday that the striker is suffering a tear in his left ankle which will keep him off the pitch for the remainder of 2022. The former Chelsea player was injured in his team’s victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League (0:4).

With the win, Leipzig made it into the last 16 of Europe’s top competition (as runners-up in the group from Real Madrid), but the worst predictions came true for their attacker. It will be impossible for Werner to travel with his national team to Qatar, Spain’s group stage rivals alongside Japan and Costa Rica.

The tests performed on the footballer revealed a rupture of the syndesmosis ligament in the left ankle. The German company has announced that it will make a decision on his treatment in the coming days, which will also determine his return date.

Werner was a call-up to all pools in Hansi Flick’s Germany, where he could have played an important role in the wrong-forward position widespread by the German side. Since making his debut in 2017, the attacker has scored 24 goals in 55 games for the team.

The German player returned to Leipzig this summer after a disappointing spell at Chelsea, who paid €53m for his services in 2020. His performance was not as expected despite winning the Champions League in 2020 and he scored 23 goals in two seasons with the Blues. With Leipzig, his record is much better: 104 goals in 175 games, plus 44 assists.

Werner’s injury is not the first for a key player ahead of the World Cup. Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kanté (France), Giorginio Wijnaldum (Netherlands), Mauro Arambarri (Uruguay) and Reece James (England) are other notable casualties from injuries ahead of the World Cup.
