Three dead, five injured in Michigan State University shooting

Three people have been killed in a shooting that sparked panic at Michigan State University in East Lansing on Monday The campus police reported this on their Twitter account. Five other people were injured and taken to hospital, authorities added. Police have circulated some CCTV photos of the suspect via social media, showing a short man wearing red shoes, a denim jacket and a baseball cap. His face cannot be seen in the pictures. Police have reported that they located the suspect outside the university and that he committed suicide.

“It appears the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death has been confirmed, said Chris Rozman, acting deputy chief of the campus police department.

Campus activities are canceled for 48 hours, including sports, classes and all other campus-related activities. “Please DO NOT go to campus tomorrow” wrote the police on Twitter. After calls alerting them to the shooting, police urged the students to take refuge.

Television images showed a heavy police presence on the university campus in search of the suspect in the shooting. Hundreds of police officers searched for the suspect on Monday evening. The shooting began just before 8:30 p.m. local time at Berkey Hall, an academic building, and also happened near the student union, a popular meeting place, Chris Rozman, acting deputy chief of the department, explained at a campus police news conference. “It was a nightmare what we experienced tonight,” he added. “We’re relieved to no longer have an active threat on campus,” he concluded, before leaving any questions.

Aedan Kelley, a junior who lives a half-mile (less than a kilometer) east of campus, told the Associated Press that he closed his doors and covered his windows “just in case.” Sirens were constant and a helicopter flew over the area. “It’s all very scary,” Kelley added. “And then I have all these people texting me and asking if I’m okay, which is overwhelming.”

Michigan State University has about 50,000 students. East Lansing is approximately 145 kilometers northwest of Detroit. The East Lansing High School auditorium, where a school board meeting was being held Monday night, was closed and police prevented people from leaving, the Lansing State Journal reported.
