Thomas Tuchel confirms talks about a contract extension with Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed rumors that he has been in talks with the new owner over a contract extension, although that is clearly not the priority in the last ten or so days of the summer transfer window.

Speaking to the assembled media in the non-broadcast portion of Friday’s press conference in Cobham, the Chelsea head coach explained the situation as follows:

“There are talks. But I think given the situation we’re coming from and where we’re in the middle of the transfer phase, I think the best thing I can do is focus on my team and on the sport and on being competitive.

“My people talk to the owners and take care of everything else. You know how happy I am to be here and how much I like it. So it’s a good thing.”

The new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly and partners at Clearlake Capital, has put Tuchel at the center of the new era, giving him more power at the club than ever before and aiming to mold the team in his image this summer. A new treaty would be a logical and certainly a welcome step in this process.

Tuchel’s current contract runs until 2024 thanks to an extension triggered after the 2021 Champions League triumph. Rumor has it that the current talks are about a contract until 2026.
