The Real ID processing date has been extended, but thousands of people have yet to start the procedures. California authorities, for example, recommend not delaying it until the last day of the stipulated deadline. For many, obtaining the Real ID is a “forever” pending task because they don’t devote time to processing it. Now, after the latest announcement of deadline extensions, they are even more confident.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced in December 2022 that the Real ID expiration date had been extended. The deadline is set for May 7, 2025. Although there is more time now, the Californian authorities are inviting those entitled to complete the procedures before the end of this year.
Why is carrying the Real ID mandatory?
Real ID is required to board flights within the United States and to enter some federal buildings such as courthouses or military bases. If you do not have a real ID card after the deadline, you will need to present a passport or other valid document to enter the country.
The Real ID is state-recognized and easy to obtain. The Road Traffic Office (DMV) is responsible for the procedure.
