Media concentration affects democracy says Atilio Boron

They will maintain the El Salvador exemption

Appearing on Channel 4’s “Frente a Frente” interview show, Castro assessed the national issue, security issues and the upcoming 2024 elections.

The President of the Legislative Forum said that in order to know and measure the effectiveness of security policy, it is necessary to ask people on the street about the effectiveness of the fight against gangs and whether they are satisfied with the peace that has been achieved.

The head of the unicameral parliament assured that the reforms of the legal system in the country will continue and the necessary measures to deal with these problems will be implemented.

He also hinted that he is aiming for re-election as an MP in 2024, which he believes will be done by the majority of MPs from the ruling Nuevas Ideas party. My basic challenge will be to maintain the country’s governability, he summarized.

He said Nuevas Ideas is the main political force in the country and does not rule out forming coalitions for the 2024 elections, even in communities where they hope to win in the elections.

He explained that since May 2021 “our MPs are working in the municipalities and we will not stop, we will be with the people, especially in times of electoral processes”.

In another part of his statements, the head of the legislature supported existing proposals to reform the number of existing municipalities in the country. We evaluate them, we study them and I think it would be good for El Salvador, he stressed.

There are currently proposals to reduce the number of communes from 262 to 50 and also to change the number of deputies representing the departments in the Legislative Assembly.

These are projects that are valued and, according to Castro, it is possible to adjust the number of MPs to 64, a number 20 seats lower than the current 84 that occupy seats in the forum.

In another part of his assessment, the Legislative Chair reiterated, as the Treasury Department has already done, that taxes in the country will not be increased and whether to collect the amounts that many are not paying.

He pointed out that there is no proposal for constitutional reform on the political radar, although there could be reforms in certain laws.
