Media concentration affects democracy says Atilio Boron

They are questioning the ruling party in Panama for an electoral maneuver

González deemed absurd the decision of the National Executive Committee (CEN), headed by Benicio Robinson, to reserve 52 of the 71 positions for MPs, including the circles of the 35 PRD-Bank MPs in the National Assembly (Parliament) they would not have to go to the primaries, a tournament scheduled for June 11th.

In this way, the current lawmakers of the political organization who intend to be re-elected in the May 5, 2024 elections would have expedited access to this consultation.

The same benefit would also apply to all representatives of PRD communities in the Municipality of Panama and other local governments in the country.

In this respect, González classified the strategy as wrong, which must be reconsidered since the decision could take effect before the electoral court before the month of February. In a statement published on social networks the day before, the PRD confirmed that it had reserved positions in “different constituencies” and that “those that are not filled will go to an electoral process (primaries)”.

For several analysts, after the debacle in the current economic and social situation in the Central American country, the PRD is trying to maintain positions and remain in power.

In the communication, the organization assures that “the necessary spaces will be guaranteed to strengthen the configuration of a great winning alliance by May 2024”.

However, González recalled that the PRD statute requires that all positions be put up for election in internal elections, although it allows exceptions for alliance reasons.

“They stick to that rule to make exceptions, they sidestep the statute for purposes other than coalition,” he noted.

On May 5, 2024, Panamanians will elect the country’s new president and vice-president, 20 members of the Central American Parliament, 71 members of the National Assembly, 81 mayors, 701 members of the Corregimiento and 11 councillors, all with their alternates. , for the period from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2029.
